Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor Guidelines

Discover how Respondus LockDown Browser enhances exam security by preventing online distractions and ensuring academic integrity.

If you intend to use Respondus LockDown Browser or Respondus Monitor, please carefully read these guidelines and contact MCC’s Innovation Learning Designer. For general assistance, you can also contact the MCC Service Desk in person in the Doser building on the Sidney campus, by creating a service ticket in the Tikit app in MyApps, by creating a service ticket from the Help tab of Canvas's Global Navigation bar, by phone at 989-328-1246 (ext. 246), or by email at servicedesk@montcalm.edu.

Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students use LockDown Browser to access an assessment, they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Students are locked into an assessment until it is submitted for grading. Lockdown Browser is a service that MCC pays for and that all instructors may utilize. Instructors do not need any special permission to use Lockdown Browser within Canvas. To enable Lockdown Browser, navigate to the Lockdown Browser section of your Canvas Course Navigation.

Select 'LockDown Browser'

Open the Settings of the Canvas quiz you wish to use Lockdown Browser with.

Select the dropdown arrow and select 'Settings'

Enable the "Require Lockdown Browser for this exam" option and the "Don't  require Respondus Monitor for this exam" option, and then click "Save + Close."

Select 'Require Lockdown Browser for this exam' and 'Don't require Respondus Monitor for this exam'

When students enter their quiz in Canvas, they will be instructed to download Respondus LockDown Browser, after which they can begin their testing.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor is a paid add-on feature for LockDown Browser that enables students to use a webcam to record themselves while they are testing when they are unable to attend a proctored test on campus in the classroom or at the college’s Testing Center (or at their high school in the case of dual enrollment students). MCC has a limited number of Respondus Monitor seats for select users on a need-based basis.

If you would like to enable Respondus Monitor in a course, you must seek prior approval with your Department Chair, Dean, and the Innovation Learning Designer. Instructors must also submit a curriculum revision with the Curriculum Committee prior to the start of term. Instructors should list Respondus Monitor as either a 'required' or 'optional' course fee. If Respondus Monitor is required, students must complete this payment themselves with either PayPal or a credit card the moment they enter their first Respondus Monitor proctored test. (Monitor licenses can only be purchased directly from Respondus by individual students and are not available through the bookstore.) If the fee is optional, students may choose to purchase Respondus Monitor or complete proctored testing at MCC's Testing Center on campus. Student Respondus Monitor licenses cost $15/per student per 12-month period, which includes access for multiple courses. For any student who needs financial assistance, please contact Student Services and they may be able to assist with the purchase.

To enable Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor, instructors should navigate to the Lockdown Browser section of Canvas Course Navigation as stated above. Enter the Settings of the quiz that requires Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor. At the following warning, click ‘Continue to Respondus Monitor.’

Click "Continue to Respondus Monitor'

Within the Settings of the selected quiz, enable the ‘Require Lockdown Browser for this exam’ option and the ‘Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) for this exam’ option. Next, choose to monitor with Webcam Only’ Webcam + Screen, or Screen Only, and then click ‘Save + Close.’

Select 'Require LockDown Browser for this exam' and 'Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) for this exam'

In order for students to purchase Respondus Monitor, they must first download Respondus LockDown Browser. After downloading the application, students should start their assigned test in Canvas. After agreeing to the Terms of Use and conducting a webcam check, students will be prompted for a PayPal or credit card payment.

At Step 3: Purchase License choose to pay with either PayPal or a Debit or Credit Card

After completing the payment, students should proceed to complete the remaining steps and begin testing. Unfortunately, because the license fee for Respondus Monitor is charged directly to student via PayPal or a credit card, financial aid cannot be used toward this payment. Some school districts may not be willing to pay this $15 fee. If you have a student who does not have the resources to pay this fee, please help them in contacting the MCC Foundation to seek assistance.

Special Instructions and Additional Assistance

When building a quiz within Canvas that will utilize Respondus LockDown Browser or Respondus Monitor, instructors should not include emojis or icons in the quiz name as this may generate an error message.

Instructors teaching dual enrollment students may need to contact the high school or district network administrator for assistance and/or appropriate permission to install Respondus LockDown Browser or Respondus Browser. In the case that students are using a Chromebook for testing, please contact the MCC Service Desk for assistance to properly install Respondus software on your device.
